Resumo

The strategic status achieved by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) discourses andpractices in developing and emerging economies, such as Brazil, in the last decade, is aremarkable phenomenon that has not received the deserved attention from criticalmanagement researchers. Drawing upon a framework of analysis that goes beyond the critiquecentred on the neoliberal discourse the authors of this paper show that the new focus of largecorporations in development in both developing and emerging economies; the correspondingstrategies undertaken by Global Development Organizations – such as the World Bank andthe United Nations –, and the crisis of relevance in strategic management in developedeconomies, are key issues to explain the extraordinary trajectory of CSR. In the end, drawingupon a critical perspective that contemplates the power of discursive, material and ideologicalissues that flow from developed toward emerging and developing economies in the era ofglobalization, the authors of this paper show that the power of colonizing discourses in theUnited States is a major challenge not only to researchers in emerging economies, but also toAnglo-American critical management researchers.
