Resumo

There are many designations used to categorise ‘the poor’. Quite often, emphasishas been given only to monetary aspects of poverty. In order to deal with this problem wepropose a multidimensional index of deprivations (or vulnerabilities) based on Census 2000data-base because it allows us to focus our attention on setores censitários, the minor unitdecision presented in a disposable microdata level. We use the index to point out where areconcentrated the potential clients of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), those ones who couldbe considered multidimensional deprived. Besides to provide a way to ranking the setorescensitários according to their vulnerabilities, the index was used to mapping an important cityof the metropolitan region of São Paulo (Guarulhos). Doing that we were able to establishwhat are the most deprived areas of the city which would be the best potential areas for theexpansion of MFIs and commercial banks that have plans for downscaling.
